Syracuse-Wawasee Lake Patrol:  The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department began a special deputy program in the early to mid-1960s to assist conservation officers in lake patrol.  The property owners’ associations and the Turkey Creek Township Advisory Board contribute a good portion of the funding for operational costs assuring 24-hour emergency service with high visibility patrol on weekends.  These officers consider their offerings a community service.  Dick Waterson served on the Lake Patrol from 1974 -2001.

Waterson’s Grocery at the Wawasee Fish Hatchery: From 1975 – 1980, Dick & Linda Waterson owned Fish Hatchery Bait and Tackle on the east end of the lake.   In May, 1980, after selling the bait shop, they purchased Galloway’s Grocery next door which they ran as Waterson’s Grocery until 1991. They repurchased the bait store in 1987, running it for about 7 years before selling.  Dick was a member of the Lake Patrol while owning these businesses.
