The Historical People of Syracuse – Wawasee

Many men and women of the past have molded and made Syracuse and the surrounding areas what it is today.

Pre-1800

America’s First Nations People and the First Settlers

This area was a favorite of both the Miami and Potawatomi Indian tribes. Lush prairies, game-filled woodlands, and many lakes teeming with fish, beaver, and most importantly, water drew them here where they established year-round villages.

Who were the people that first settled this land, and appreciated the natural resources that it had to offer?

1801-1900

Influx of European Settlers and Technological Advances

The early 1800’s saw an increase in the number of white European settlers moving west from eastern cities. The promise of vast expanses of both woodland and prairie made it ideal for both hunting and farming, especially for grazing livestock. Technological advances began to change the shape of how household chores, farming and other labor was accomplished, as well as how we moved from one location to another.

Who where the people that lead the way in this early time of technological advancement?

Transportation, Communication, and Beyond

The 1900’s ushered in a time of unprecedented technological advances in all areas of human existence. Modern manufacturing methods were established, the car was fast replacing the horse and mass communication was finally advanced beyond the printing press. One of the most basic felt needs of the human race, once food and shelter are established, is the desire to recreate. Lake Wawasee and Syracuse Lake became an even bigger draw that in years past as people from greater distances could more easily and quickly travel here for holidays and vacations.

Learn about the people that accompliahed most of what we still enjoy today.
